Department of Economics at Stamford University organized a seminar on June 12, 2014 to discuss the proposed national budget. Prof. Dr. ATM Zahurul Huq, Chairman of the department presided over the seminar.
In the seminar both students and teachers discussed different aspects of the proposed budget, especially the role of Agriculture in our economic development. The participants also discussed impact on the proposed taxes and they hailed tax cut on the raw materials for medicine. However, they considered the ever decreasing allocation in education and health sectors as a faulty step. Prof. Dr. Zahurul Huq presented a detailed discussion on the budget. He analyzed the budget structure, the influence of inflation and the impact of the budget on the private investment. He lauded the measures to increase different facilities despite some flaws in the budget. Discussions also included the increase of allocation for women and the opportunities for their education. Some recommendations were made to make the budget a balanced one through necessary modifications. Among the teachers, the speakers were Prof. Mr. Habibur Rahman, Ms. Rahat Banu, Mr. Mohsinul Karim, Ms. Susmita Banik and Mr. Sibbir Ahmed.
