Stamford University Bangladesh organised an international seminar titled “The Role of Research in Nation Building” aimed at highlighting the significance of research in national development and the creation of a knowledge-based society. The seminar was held on Wednesday at 1130 am at the university’s Siddheswari campus auditorium.
The event was attended by distinguished academics, researchers, policymakers, and students from various disciplines.
Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, Abdul Khaleque, attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the seminar, he stated that research is not merely a matter of academic excellence, but one of the key driving forces behind national development, policy formulation, and the establishment of a knowledge-based society. He also described science and research as vital components of the Prime Minister’s vision for building a developed nation.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr Muhammad Aziz Rahman, Associate Dean of Research at the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, Federation University, Australia, and Vice President of the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA). In his speech, he discussed contemporary global research trends, innovation, public health, and the practical application of research in development planning.
The seminar was chaired by Stamford University Bangladesh Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sharif Nafe As-Saber. He emphasised that there is no alternative to research in building a prosperous and knowledge-driven nation. He added that universities must become centres of research-oriented education and innovative thinking, and said Stamford University is working towards achieving that goal.
Among others present at the seminar were Emeritus Professor M. Feroze Ahmed; Treasurer and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies Professor Dr. Mohammad Jeaul Hasan; Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder; Proctor and Associate Professor Dr. Mrityunjoy Acharjee; and Director of the Stamford University Research Centre (SURC) Dr. Md. Sharifull Islam.
Teachers, researchers, students, and administrative officials also participated in the seminar. Speakers stressed the importance of improving the research environment, expanding international collaboration, and encouraging young researchers to contribute to national progress through innovation and scientific inquiry.
The seminar was jointly organised by the Stamford University Research Centre (SURC) and the university’s Faculty of Science. Organisers expressed hope that such initiatives would play an important role in strengthening collaboration between academia and policymakers for the advancement of research, knowledge-sharing, and national development.
